Name:                                Australopithecus garhi.

Other names:                 –

Age:                                   2.5 million years ago.

Height:                             Uncertain – only fragments found to date.

Weight:                            Uncertain – only fragments found to date.

Brain Size:                       Around 450 cc

Description:

                • Large canine teeth
                • Thick enamel on teeth
                • Lower face projected outwards
                • Fairly long arms

Diet:                                    Ate meat, possible antelope, and marrow from the bones.

Culture:                             Possibly first species to use stone tools.

Tool Culture:                  Olduwan tools found nearby – not known if related to the                                                             remains.

Date Discovered:           First fragments discovered in 1990, then excavations between                                                   1996-1998 uncovered more remains.

Area Discovered:          Bouri, Middle Awash, Ethiopia, Africa

Who Discovered:          Berhane Asfaw, paleoanthropologist.
